What's Past is Prologue

I'm an MLS student on the archives track at the University of Maryland. I found myself posting a lot of articles, photos, links, etc. regarding archives, libraries, books, and other things on my Facebook, and felt it would be better to put these posts in a place specifically for the purpose of creating a fond of sorts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fonds), chronically things I find interesting about archives, libraries and books.

Oh and in the interest of citing sources, the title of the blog is from The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

Map of New Mexico, 1909

Today marks the 100th Anniversary of New Mexico’s statehood. In honor of this monumental anniversary, we’ve selected a number of documents to feature on our website. Check them out!

And yet some people still think I go to school in Mexico, even though NM has been a state for a century.

Did you know a major part of New Mexico gaining statehood was the decision to build Elephant Butte Dam, which, at the time, was the largest dam in the world until Hoover Dam was built? Originally, a British company had wanted to build a dam at Elephant Butte, but were denied multiple times. After their last appeal failed, the government decided to build their own dam on the site. There was a town at the location, and all of the families were required to relocate, the dam was built, and the valley was flooded to create what is now Elephant Butte reservoir.

There’s your random bit of New Mexico history for the day.
