It kind of gradually evolved. Back when I was a music ed major, I realized that the music degree was slowly killing my soul, and I was incredibly depressed for a variety of reasons, and found myself spending most of my time watching movies. When I decided to change majors, I joked that I wanted to find a job where I could get paid to watch movies all day. So I took one of those career tests, and it said I should either be a librarian, or a special ed teacher (which is odd because I don’t want to teach). I ended up switching my major to English with the intent of going to library school and focusing either on archives or youth services. I started applying for library jobs, and got a position with the NMSU archives, and then I started taking a lot of film classes. When I got to grad school, I found myself gravitating more and more toward audiovisual archives, but at that time, I was planning on speeding through the program as quickly as possible, and then moving back to New Mexico to be with my then-boyfriend. After a VERY messy break-up, I decided to focus exclusively on my career, and sent e-mails to every film preservation company in the DC-metro area, and ended up with an internship and just fell absolutely in LOVE with preserving old films. :)
From my other blog. This is actually the question I get asked the most when I tell people I want to be a film preservationist, so I thought I’d repost it here. :)
